Hatha Yoga by Charne - class information

Welcome to Charné’s Therapeutic Yoga.  I hope that you will benefit greatly from your yoga experience.

I would like to point out that my classes are in no way religious.  The aim of my classes are to exercise the body and mind and bring them in union with each other.  Yoga is however an ancient Indian tradition and there will be words or terms used in the classes that relate back to this.

What to expect from the class

A one on one  yoga session or class is 60 minutes in length and includes a relaxation/meditation session at the end of the session.

The yoga class will start with breathing exercises as well as self-awareness.  It is important to listen to your body at all times.  Never over strain or push your self to far as you can only cause harm to your body.

Once the body is warmed up and ready we will perform a sequence of movements (asana’s).  The class will end with a visualisation/meditation session to calm the mind.

It is always best to perform yoga on an empty stomach.  Try to eat at least one hour prior to coming to class so that you will not feel full and uncomfortable during the asana’s.

Please bring a bottle of water to drink during and after the class, as you will get hot and thirsty.  A small towel and pillow are also good to bring with to make your self-comfortable when lying on the floor.

The word asana means calm and steady pose. Always keep this in mind when practising yoga, as it is one of the main aims to calm and steady the body.

Practice self-acceptance when you do yoga.  Accept whatever limitations, imperfections, inflexibility or illness you may have.  Yoga is a non-competitive exercise and must be enjoyed.  There is no goal in yoga except to respect your body and do the best you can.

Breathing

Breathing is one of the vital parts of yoga; it is referred to as Pranayama.  Prana means vital energy and Yama means control.  When performing yoga one must breathe in and out through the nose.  The breathing should be steady and constant.

Illness or discomfort

It is very important to inform me at all times if you have an illness or feel discomfort during the class.  Some of the asana’s can be contraindicated to some illnesses or diseases and would need to be avoided
